- Unofficial Grievance Guide
This is the first Guide I made. I took the very best APWU training guides, updated them, expanded each chapter, and added multiple new chapters. The intent is to give a new Steward the ability to fight discipline and file the 30 most common APWU Grievances.
This Guide is Version 4 of the Unofficial Grievance Guide.
August 29th, 2025 Update: Version 4 is now available. This version includes expansions on Arguing at Step 1, Grievance Structure, and 8 more organizational documents. This expansion was created due to feedback I have received by Stewards who either wanted this information or kept emailing for this information. Version 5 is planned to include additional Chapters after the updated JCIM is released.
The document is formatted to be printed in color, but was modified to remove highlighting so it could be printed in black and white.
Version 4 of this Guide includes (but is not limited to):
- 63 Total Chapters
- 30 Contractual Chapters
- 33 Discipline Chapters
- Multiple Revised / Edited Forms
- Information on Organizing and Documenting Grievances
- Arguing Step 1 Contentions
- Writing Step 2 Contentions
- Building Arguments During the Investigative Interview
- Extensive Analysis of Procedural Due Process
- Breakdown of Appropriate Discipline Remedies
- Breakdown of Compensatory Remedies
- Breakdown of Grievance Structure
This Guide is a living Guide, and will be updated over time.
2. CORRECTION – A Steward’s Guide to Additions & Corrections
This was the second Guide I made. After teaching Stewards across the Country I quickly discovered that the majority of people did not use A&C’s correctly. Even paid Steward training didn’t cover the nuances of using Corrections to win a Grievance. This Guide is a masterclass on combating and using Managements denials against them!
3. HOSTILE – A Steward’s Guide to Harassment
One of the first topics I got really good at was Harassment and Hostile Work Environments. When talking to other Stewards, Officers and APWU Representatives I saw huge inconsistencies in our success. Issues included not leaning into Management’s responsibilities, not using 1767’s, not gathering enough evidence, and so on. The biggest issue was the APWU did not have a roadmap to fight against Harassment! This Guide is designed to fill that hole. It is the roadmap I use, the roadmap I have taught others, and it is the roadmap that has worked over and over again. Why send another Grievance to Arbitration when you can scare a bad Supervisor off?
